Government Medical College Amritsar was founded as a Medical School in Lahore in the year 1864. The campus was later shifted to Amritsar in the year 1920. The Medical School was upgraded to a Government Medical College in 1943. Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital is also a part of the Medical College which was initially started as a general hospital in 1891.
GMC Amritsar is affiliated with Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot. The Government Medical College, Amritsar offers Diploma, UG, and PG level courses such as MD, B.Sc, M.Sc, MS, MBBS, PGD, and Diploma. All the courses are managed by the Medical Council of India. Admissions to undergraduate, postgraduate and para-medical courses are offered on the basis of NEET scores.

Students also need to register and qualify the All India level counselling conducted to offer admissions to various medical colleges of India based on NEET scores. For MBBS programme-
Candidates seeking admission to the MBBS programme need to appear and qualify NEET (UG).
Based on the qualifying marks achieved by candidates in NEET (UG), they will have to register themselves for NEET (UG) counselling.
Candidates will register themselves for counselling of NEET (UG) on the official website of NEET along with all required documents and payment of fees.
Candidates need to select Government Medical College, Amritsar as their first preference while doing the choice locking in the NEET UG counselling.
Admissions to the MBBS programme are offered based on NEET (UG) counselling, choice filling, choice locking, document verification, merit and fee payment.
For M.D/M.S programmes-
Candidates seeking admission to M.D/M.S programmes need to appear and qualify NEET (PG).

Infrastructure needs to be amped up in the institute. Much of the practical equipment is being provided to students by teachers themselves. Which is really not the best thing u wanna see in a government run college
